Hosanna! Reflections for Palm Sunday

From Mark 11:1-11: Jesus’ Triumphant Entry

Jesus entered Jerusalem with much fanfare and then he went back to Bethany (where he started in verse 1).  In the world’s eyes, he made no progress but spiritually he fulfilled the scriptures of Zechariah 9:9 and 14:4

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”Zechariah 9:9

“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,

From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.”Zechariah 14:4

Reflection: Many times in our lives, we may feel that we are not going anywhere, as the world would define progress.  Take heart, God may be using these times to grow you in an eternal way!

During Jesus’ triumphant entry, branches were used to create a red carpet for Him.  The next day, as he traveled the same path, an unproductive fig tree was cursed.

Reflection: If we bear fruit, God will make us part of His glorious plan but if we are not, we will be cursed.  Can your neighbors, family and friends see your fruit?

As Jesus entered Jerusalem the crowd shouted ‘Hosanna!’  Possible a different crowd shouted ‘Crucify Him!’ only days later.  It was God that prompted the shouting on Jesus’ entry.  As Jesus said, if they were quiet, even the rocks would cry out. (Luke 19:40)  But it was the pharisees who prompted the crowd to shout crucify Him!

Reflection:  Each day we have a choice to listen to the messages of the world (money, sex, power, etc.) or of God.  Who are you following?!

Jesus didn’t have many possessions, at different times throughout the Gospels, he borrowed a colt, a boat, a room (for the last supper), and even His tomb was borrowed.  All borrowed because he would not need any of them for long.
Reflection: If God, who didn’t need help from anyone, choose to ask others for contributions to His mission, shouldn’t we?
Happy Palm Sunday!  May you have a blessed holy week!

Thirsty for God! Faith, Waiting for Truth!

Tortured for Christ, Richard Wurmbrand           This is an excerpt from “Tortured for Christ”

           by Richard Wurmbrand

‘Russians – A People with such ‘Thirsty Souls’

“For me, to preach the gospel to the Russians is heaven on earth.  I have preached the gospel to men of many nations, but I have never seen a people drink in the gospel like the Russians.   They have such thirsty souls.

An Orthodox priest, a friend of mine, telephoned me and told me that a Russian officer had come to him to confess.  My friend did not know Russian.  However, knowing that I speak Russian, he had given him my address.  The next day this man came to see me.  He longed for God, but he had never seen a Bible.  He had no religious education and never attended religious services (churches in Russia then were very scarce).  He loved God without the slightest knowledge of Him.

I read to him the Sermon on the Mount and the parables of Jesus.  After hearing them, he danced around the room in rapturous joy proclaiming, “What a wonderful beauty!  How could I live without knowing this Christ!”  It was the first time that I saw someone so joyful in Christ.

Then I made a mistake.  I read to him the passion and the crucifixion on Christ, without having prepared him for this.  He had not expected it and, when he heard how Christ was beaten, how He was crucified and that in the end He died, he fell into an armchair and began to weep bitterly.  He had believed in a Savior and now his Savior was dead!

I looked at him and was ashamed.  I had called myself a Christian, a pastor, and a teacher of others, but I had never shared the suffering of Christ as this Russian officer now shared them.  Looking at him, it was like seeing Mary Magdalene weeping at the foot of the cross, faithfully weeping when Jesus was a corpse in the tomb.

Then I read to him the story of the resurrection and watched his expression change.  He had not known that his Savior arose from the tomb.  When he heard this wonderful news, he beat his knees and swore – using very dirty, but very “holy” profanity.  This was his crude manner of speech.  Again he rejoiced,  shouting for joy.  “He is alive!  He is alive!”  He danced around the room once more, overwhelmed with happiness!

I said to him, “Let us pray!”  He did not know how to pray.  He did not know our “holy” phrases.  He fell on his knees together with me and his words of prayer were: “Oh God, what a fine chap you are!  If I were You and You were me, I would never have forgiven You of Your sins.  But You are really a very nice chap!  I love You with all of my heart.”

I think that all the angels in heaven stopped what they were doing to listen to this sublime prayer from a Russian officer.  The man had been won for Christ!”

Amen!  Hallelujah!

Protecting Your Family

As Christian parents, it is imperative that we regulate what our children see on TV, the internet and elsewhere

“Train up a child in the way he should go,  And when he is old he will not depart from it” – Proverbs 22:6

“But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart” – Matthew 5:28

“I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman” – Job 31:1

Some Statistics:

  1. On Internet sexual content from Online MBA.  See the full infographic here:

2. On TV – according to USA Today, teens experience 3 times as much sexual content on TV then on the internet.

3. The impact of all this sexual content:

    • According to a Rand study, teens that saw the most sex on TV were twice as likely to initiate intercourse
    • According to Pediatrics, teens who were exposed to the most sexual content were twice as likely to get pregnant in the subsequent 3 year period.
    • Also TV, internet and games, impact their weight and sleep, depression and anxiety, and even grades

So, How Do We Respond?!

I was planning to put together a list of tools and resources but then found Focus on the Family’s page on the topic and I think it is pretty good.  There are other tools out there as well like SafeEyes and Norton Family but this site also contains resources for TV, etc.  So take a look at this site and let us know what you think in the comments.  Thanks!

New Year’s Resolution

Finally a new blog!   Sorry for the delay.  Actually this is only a mini-blog but I do have 3 blogs in the works so keep a look out for them.

Next week in New Year’s day and many people including Christians see this as an opportunity to start a new habit by making a resolution.  A great resolution to make is to read the Bible in the year.  It takes discipline but it’s doable.  I’ve done it many times.  I find that the daily reading takes up 15 minutes so you can “catch up” by reading for 30 minutes every once in a while.

I’m trying to decide between a few resolutions but reading the Bible and journaling more regularly will probably make the final list for me.  In case it makes it to the top of your list, here are a few books you might find helpful:

Bible in a year books: (I’ve read each of these and can recommend)

Complimentary Books:

I Am Second

A friend introduced me to ‘I am second’ yesterday.  It’s a great site where famous and not so famous people share their testimonies.  That is how they came to follow Jesus.  So ‘I am second’ really means, ‘God is first!’

I couldn’t figure out how to embed the video here.  I’m sorry.  I will fix it, if I can this weekend.  The Josh Hamilton video is well worth watching!

Enjoy and have a nice weekend!

Small Group Men’s Bible Studies Forming!!

Have you desired to just be around a few good friends that know you?  You might share a joke,  or something your kids are going through, or anything in between.  Then you’ve come to the  right place.

We are establishing small groups for the new year.  Small groups are the essence of this ministry and they are what allows us to ‘do life together’.  The setting might be different but we always spend some time in fellowship, Bible study, and prayer.

Interested?  Well, let us know by adding a comment to this post!

M = Model the Behavior

I just love this picture!  It appeared in the Fall edition of Seed & Harvest from the Trinity School for Ministry.  Although I don’t know Tyler, I can tell he is a great dad.  So I thought this was the perfect image to use as we talk about the ‘M’ in M*E*N*T*O*R.

We’d like to ask you to tell us about people you know who are great Dads.  We then publish some of the stories and videos that we receive.  You can contact us at NYMensMinistry@yahoo.com.

Thanks for reading!
