Christmas Prayer Request

I received this prayer request from one of the men in our ministry and he said that I could share it here.  I would bet that we can all agree with the sentiments of this prayer.  May the true meaning of Christmas shine through this season, for all of us!

Men, Christmas, true meaning of Christmas
My prayer is that coming into this holiday season, we not forget the true meaning of our celebration and that we guard our hearts and minds from distractions, subtle behaviors and not so subtle behaviors that could pull us away from God and grieve the Holy Spirit.

I know in the past, it has been very easy for me to conform to the world’s point of view and start setting up and worshiping idols. It is in these times that Screwtape gets a hold of me and says it’s okay to participate in certain behaviors and attitudes because it’s the holidays and it won’t offend the Lord. That leads to a very slow and steady decent into self deception and before I know it I am far far away from God.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” – Romans 12:2 NIV

Three wise menDo not set foot on the path of the wicked
or walk in the way of evildoers. Avoid it, do not travel on it;
turn from it and go on your way. For they cannot rest until they do evil;
they are robbed of sleep till they make someone stumble. They eat the bread of wickedness
and drink the wine of violence. The path of the righteous is like the morning sun,
shining ever brighter till the full light of day. But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness;
they do not know what makes them stumble. My son, pay attention to what I say;
turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight,
keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them
and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart,
for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity;
keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead;
fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet
and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left;
keep your foot from evil. ”      -Proverbs 4:14-27 NIV

Hosanna! Reflections for Palm Sunday

From Mark 11:1-11: Jesus’ Triumphant Entry

Jesus entered Jerusalem with much fanfare and then he went back to Bethany (where he started in verse 1).  In the world’s eyes, he made no progress but spiritually he fulfilled the scriptures of Zechariah 9:9 and 14:4

“Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your King is coming to you;
He is just and having salvation,
Lowly and riding on a donkey,
A colt, the foal of a donkey.”Zechariah 9:9

“And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
Which faces Jerusalem on the east.
And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two,

From east to west,
Making a very large valley;
Half of the mountain shall move toward the north
And half of it toward the south.”Zechariah 14:4

Reflection: Many times in our lives, we may feel that we are not going anywhere, as the world would define progress.  Take heart, God may be using these times to grow you in an eternal way!

During Jesus’ triumphant entry, branches were used to create a red carpet for Him.  The next day, as he traveled the same path, an unproductive fig tree was cursed.

Reflection: If we bear fruit, God will make us part of His glorious plan but if we are not, we will be cursed.  Can your neighbors, family and friends see your fruit?

As Jesus entered Jerusalem the crowd shouted ‘Hosanna!’  Possible a different crowd shouted ‘Crucify Him!’ only days later.  It was God that prompted the shouting on Jesus’ entry.  As Jesus said, if they were quiet, even the rocks would cry out. (Luke 19:40)  But it was the pharisees who prompted the crowd to shout crucify Him!

Reflection:  Each day we have a choice to listen to the messages of the world (money, sex, power, etc.) or of God.  Who are you following?!

Jesus didn’t have many possessions, at different times throughout the Gospels, he borrowed a colt, a boat, a room (for the last supper), and even His tomb was borrowed.  All borrowed because he would not need any of them for long.
Reflection: If God, who didn’t need help from anyone, choose to ask others for contributions to His mission, shouldn’t we?
Happy Palm Sunday!  May you have a blessed holy week!

Thirsty for God! Faith, Waiting for Truth!

Tortured for Christ, Richard Wurmbrand           This is an excerpt from “Tortured for Christ”

           by Richard Wurmbrand

            ‘Russians – A People with such ‘Thirsty Souls’

“For me, to preach the gospel to the Russians is heaven on earth.  I have preached the gospel to men of many nations, but I have never seen a people drink in the gospel like the Russians.   They have such thirsty souls.

An Orthodox priest, a friend of mine, telephoned me and told me that a Russian officer had come to him to confess.  My friend did not know Russian.  However, knowing that I speak Russian, he had given him my address.  The next day this man came to see me.  He longed for God, but he had never seen a Bible.  He had no religious education and never attended religious services (churches in Russia then were very scarce).  He loved God without the slightest knowledge of Him.

I read to him the Sermon on the Mount and the parables of Jesus.  After hearing them, he danced around the room in rapturous joy proclaiming, “What a wonderful beauty!  How could I live without knowing this Christ!”  It was the first time that I saw someone so joyful in Christ.

Then I made a mistake.  I read to him the passion and the crucifixion on Christ, without having prepared him for this.  He had not expected it and, when he heard how Christ was beaten, how He was crucified and that in the end He died, he fell into an armchair and began to weep bitterly.  He had believed in a Savior and now his Savior was dead!

I looked at him and was ashamed.  I had called myself a Christian, a pastor, and a teacher of others, but I had never shared the suffering of Christ as this Russian officer now shared them.  Looking at him, it was like seeing Mary Magdalene weeping at the foot of the cross, faithfully weeping when Jesus was a corpse in the tomb.

Then I read to him the story of the resurrection and watched his expression change.  He had not known that his Savior arose from the tomb.  When he heard this wonderful news, he beat his knees and swore – using very dirty, but very “holy” profanity.  This was his crude manner of speech.  Again he rejoiced,  shouting for joy.  “He is alive!  He is alive!”  He danced around the room once more, overwhelmed with happiness!

I said to him, “Let us pray!”  He did not know how to pray.  He did not know our “holy” phrases.  He fell on his knees together with me and his words of prayer were: “Oh God, what a fine chap you are!  If I were You and You were me, I would never have forgiven You of Your sins.  But You are really a very nice chap!  I love You with all of my heart.”

I think that all the angels in heaven stopped what they were doing to listen to this sublime prayer from a Russian officer.  The man had been won for Christ!”

Amen!  Hallelujah!

Men’s Retreat with PriorityOne

Great weekend everyone! We had our largest group ever, 16 people. One member of our group, Curtis, was baptized in the lake! We had a great time getting to know each other. It’s great to have good Christian friends. For those that couldn’t join us – we missed you!

Just posted some pictures on our facebook group. http://www.facebook.com/groups/43848377913/  Hope you enjoy. Here are just a few:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Finally, in the spirit of the weekend, here are 10 things I learned:
(1) Alhassan can play a mean game of frisbee golf.  After one of my throws he said “you aren’t very athletic are you?”  Thank brother!
(2) A letter in Vinny Coniglio’s last name is silent. Do you know which one?  Hint: It’s not the ‘C’
(3) John snores
(4) If you take a long time to drink your milkshake … make sure no one is around to continue to bring it up all weekend.
(5) Alhassan once shaved his head and John would for a $1000, any takers?
(6) Robert can’t drive a nail while wearing a blindfold, sunglasses and a funny hat
(7) Although it may have felt like it, we didn’t set a world record for the longest time between sinking a ball (other than the cue ball) in billards.
(8) Yves is fearless – zip line, swing, rope course …. bring it on!

(9) When you get baptized in Lake Champion, the Holy Spirit turns your potbelly into a six pack (Curtis)!

and #10….
(10) Yes Vinny, the water fountain works!

Come join us for one of our small groups this week.  Either Thursday evening or Saturday morning.  Send a note to learn more.

>Lent: Don’t Give Up!

>(Sorry for the long delay between posts)

Hey guys! I know that’s a weird subject for this blog entry but it was inspired!

Did you guys make a resolution for lent? Something you will either stop or start doing for the next 40 (now 39 days). If you were thinking of something but didn’t do it (or stop doing it) yesterday, don’t give up. Why not start today. We are imperfect, we know that (and guess what – so does God). So why not start today?!

I’ve decided to meditate/journal every day through Lent. I’m hoping I can build discipline and start to enjoy it. To let you know how much of a stretch this is for me, I’ve been journaling about once a month. And I’ve been satisfied with that because that was once more than I was doing before.

Why not share your resolution so we can pray for you and cheer you on!

Recommitting to Prayer

About three weeks ago, we discussed prayer (see below post) and multiple people committed to trying to pray 3 times a day throughout Lent.  Many have mentioned that they, just like me, have struggled to get into this rhythm of stopping, breathing, and spending time with God.  Therefore since we are nearly exactly in the middle of Lent, we decided to recommit ourselves to this effort for the second half of Lent.  Why not join us and let us know your thoughts by adding comments below.

I thought I would share a few comments that I have shared with others over the last few weeks with the hope that they may be an encouragement to you as you attempt to get into the practice of communing with God.  God Bless!

About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’ – which means, ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’  – Matthew 27:46

Jesus was on the cross for 6 hours at this point.  He had already been flogged, had nails put through his hands and feet, and has been insulted all throughout.  Why would Jesus make this proclamation at this time and be silent through everything else?  Have you ever wondered this? Well it is important to note that in Jewish tradition, the Passover lamb was slaughtered at the 9th hour.  So you see, Jesus is our Passover lamb.  So at the ninth hour he became sin for us and was cut off from God.  For the first time (in all time), he couldn’t commune with God and the loneliness and abandonment he felt made him yell out. I think this gives us some appreciation for the blessing we have in being able to commune with God.  Jesus was cutoff so we wouldn’t have to be.  I know I want to value that.

This hymn is from Claudia Hernaman:

“Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray,
Teach us with you to mourn our sins, and close by you to stay.

As You with Satan did contend and did the victory win,
O give us strength in you to fight, in you to conquer sin.

As you bore hunger and your thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self, and chiefly live by your most holy Word.

And through the days of penitence, and through your Passion-tide,
Yes, evermore, in life and death, Jesus! With us abide.

Abide with us, that so, this life of suffering over-past,
An Easter of unending joy we may attain at last!”
